Education
The Wake Forest University Translational Science Institute fosters advances in human health by recruiting, educating and nurturing health professionals and researchers in different disciplines.
We envision a generation of researchers who have strong content expertise in their chosen areas of methodology or science and the multidisciplinary perspective required to apply their knowledge and expertise to the collaborative opportunities presented by the multidimensional, complex biological, environmental, social, and political influences on population health. Our programs instill understanding of a common language of scientific discovery and key skills in team science. We believe that scientists whose disciplinary expertise is complemented by training in multidisciplinary team science will contribute greatly to the rapid translation of new knowledge into improvements in population health.

Summer Translational Research Experiences for Undergraduates and Medical Students
The TSI offers clinical and translational research experiences for minority and non-minority undergraduate and medical student trainees interested in careers in clinical and translational research. Students can spend the summer in a research intensive environment with complementary and individualized workshops, journal clubs and seminars designed to both introduce participants to careers in biomedical sciences and to strengthen the knowledge of undergraduates of the necessary academic, GRE/MCAT and research credentials to facilitate their entry into the programs of their choice.
TSI Medical Student Scholars
In 2008, up to four TSI-sponsored WFU medical students will be chosen from applicants to the Medical Student Research Fellowships to work with established teams of translational researchers. Scholars will be provided stipends during their research experience.
TSI Undergraduate Student Scholars
Three highly competitive undergraduate students will be chosen from among applicants to the Summer Research Opportunities Program and the Excellence in Cardiovascular Sciences Program for Minority Students to participate in a translational research experience with established teams of TSI investigators in the summer of 2008. TSI sponsorship includes travel, lodging, and stipends.
