Acne is a skin condition which has plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), inflamed pimples (pustules), and deeper lumps (nodules). Acne occurs on the face, as well as the neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. Although most teenagers get some form of acne, adults in their 20's, 30's, 40's, or even older, can develop acne. Often, acne clears up after several years, even without treatment. Acne can be disfiguring and upsetting to patient. Untreated acne can leave permanent scars; these may be treated by a dermatologist in the future. To avoid acne scarring, treating acne is important.

Psoriasis Skin Treatment Center

The Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center provides a broad array of treatment options for patients suffering from psoriasis - a chronic skin condition that affects about two percent of the population - and other severe skin diseases. It is led by Dr. Steven R. Feldman, a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Hair Disorders Program

The Hair Disorders Program serves patients of all ages who have hair loss or abnormal hair growth. Patients may take part in studies aimed at determining the causes and treatment of different types of hair loss. Faculty members participate in regular clinical/pathologic correlation conferences to ensure the highest standards of diagnosis.

The General Dermatology Program is a large outpatient clinical practice, located in the Richard Janeway Clinical Sciences Tower. It is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.

Dermatopathology Unit

The Dermatopathology Unit uses various techniques to provide expert tissue analysis and diagnosis of skin lesions. This is done to support the clinical and research efforts of the department. Currently the staff is using and developing molecular techniques to aid in the diagnosis of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin and tumors. Special emphasis is put on research into and diagnosis of cancers including melanomas and lymphomas of the skin.

Dermatologic Surgery

The Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology Unit serves about 950 patients each year with complex and advanced skin cancer, using Mohs' micrographic surgery. A multiple specialty approach for the patient is favored with some patients undergoing repair after clearance of their tumor by physicians in the fields of facial plastics, plastic surgery, and oculoplastic surgery. Second opinion and diagnostic services are available. The Director of Dermatologic Surgery is Dr. Phillip M. Williford.

Cosmetic Dermatology Center
