A Message from Dr. Blackstock
Welcome to the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. As part of the Wake Forest NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, we provide care for patients living in western North Carolina as well as Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and South Carolina.
We have approximately 30 faculty members distributed across 3 sections within the Department. The physician staff is comprised of 12 Board-certified radiation oncologists, all of whom subspecialize in the oncologic management of different tumor types.
The Section of Medical Physics is comprised of 13 MS and PhD-level medical physicists who provide technical expertise in all forms of radiotherapy delivery. We have 3 PhD-level scientists in the Section of Radiation Biology with close collaborations with 2 additional PhD scientists in the Brain Tumor Center of Excellence.
In addition to 6 residents in our well-established training program, we currently have 5 PhD /MD trainees in our NCI-funded translational research fellowship.
The WFU Department of Radiation Oncology is a leading radiation oncology center with the most advanced research programs in all 3 areas of the radiation oncology specialty. Within the department, there is 3.0 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit and a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner dedicated to Bioanatomic treatment planning. We have one of the busiest Gamma Knife programs in the southeast and an active extracranial stereotactic program. The department conducts NIH-funded research in its Clinical, Medical Physics and Radiation Biology sections.
