Excellence in Research
Areas of research in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology include substance abuse, neurodegenerative disorders, psychiatric illness, pediatric development and pharmacology, perinatal, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric disorders, cognitive behavior, molecular neuroscience, substance abuse, psychiatric illness, cellular protection and aging.
The foundation for graduate and postdoctoral training is individually directed research opportunities in over four dozen laboratories with active investigative programs.
Carlos M. Ferrario, M.D., a hypertension specialist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, lectured on new endocrine mechanisms and the renin-angiotensin system at the International Congress of Endocrinology in Kyoto, Japan on March 28 and 29. Following the lecture, Ferrario attended a ceremony with the Emperor and Empress of Japan.

Busija, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded the prestigious Doctorem Medicinae Honoris Causa by the University of Szeged Medical School (formerly Albert Szent-Györgyi Faculty of Medicine), Hungary, one of the prominent medical schools of Europe.

Adult male monkeys exposed to cocaine while in the womb have poor impulse control and may be more vulnerable to drug abuse than female monkeys, even a decade or more after the exposure, according to a new study by researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
