Journeys: Navigations for Newly Licensed Nurses

The Journeys program is designed to provide support to the new graduate nurse during the first year of employment. The goal of this program is to bridge the gap between education and practice by supporting new nurses as they transition into their new professional role.

The program consists of 2 pathways:

  • Nurse Resident pathway for Baccalaureate (BSN) graduates
  • Nurse Intern pathway for Associate and Diploma (ADN) graduates

The program includes:

  • Orientation–General nursing, specialty classes and structured preceptorships
  • Quarterly Journeys workshops–Didactic sessions, small group discussions, peer networking, simulated practice
  • Graduate Nurse Advisor(s)

Quarterly 8-hour workshops are specific to the work area—medical/surgical, critical care, or pediatrics/neonatal—and consist of topics such as:

  • Managing delivery of care
  • Patient instability
  • Code blue review
  • Stress management and self care
  • End-of-life care
  • Shared governance
  • Team building and delegation
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Cultural competence and diversity
  • Multidisciplinary communication
