In Evidence-Based Patient Care,
Knowledge Makes All the Difference

“The Section of General Internal Medicine provides exemplary patient care and creates an environment of academic excellence and superior clinical and health services research.”-
Catherine H. Messick Jones, M.D., M.S.,
Interim Section Head

The Section of General Internal Medicine is committed to enhance and support the Medical Center’s mission in the areas of patient care, medical education and clinical research.  Physicians within the Section of General Internal Medicine provide primary care services at University Internal Medicine Associates, the Medicine Out-Patient Department and the Downtown Health Plaza. The General Internal Medicine Service, including Wake Forest Inpatient Physicians and the four teaching services, is the largest inpatient service at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.  Within the last year, the section initiated new clinical services, including a Palliative Care Unit and surgical co-management.

Highlights

In the Section of General Internal Medicine, research, conducted at highest scientific standards, targets areas such as:
  • access to care of under served populations
  • aging and geriatric care
  • professional education
  • medical informatics.

Hospitalists can make a difference.
Growing up in Africa, Patience Agborbesong, a physician with the Section on General Internal Medicine, quickly learned the value of hospitals.
