Current Research:

Dr. Cann’s research focuses on the effect of interrupted estrogen exposure on atherosclerosis. It is widely held that relative estrogen deficiency is associated with enhanced atherogenesis and increased risk of coronary heart disease. However, reintroduction of estrogen in women after a significant duration of estrogen deficiency does not appear to decrease and may increase the risk of coronary heart disease. Thus, reintroduction of estrogen to an estrogen deficient woman may carry with it its own set of cardiovascular risks. Atherosclerosis is known to be a chronic inflammatory disease and estrogenic compounds, with or without the addition of a progestin, modulate the inflammatory response in postmenopausal women. Estrogens act on different components of the vascular wall, including the endothelium, smooth muscle cells, and leukocytes, and the involved signaling cascades are integral parts of the inflammatory response. Under the direction of Dr. Koudy Williams, Dr. Cann has been using a mouse model of atherosclerosis in which treatment groups are exposed to varying periods of estrogen replacement and/or deficiency to test the hypothesis that while interrupted estrogen exposure has little effect on atherosclerosis extent per se, estrogen deficiency followed by reintroduction will result in atherosclerotic lesions with cellular, extracellular, and molecular characteristics associated with increased plaque instability.
