Application Process

This is a three year training program (PGY 1-3) with currently 13-positions at the PGY1 year. Residents are selected from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. We do not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status. We do not require that the applicant have graduated from a medical school within a specific period of time nor do we require any additional graduate medical education.

Appointments are made through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) beginning at the PGY1 level only. All participants are bound to abide by the policies of the NRMP. Applicants must apply via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Please note that any questions you may have regarding ERAS should be directed to your Dean's Office/Office of Students Activities or the ERAS web site. We strongly request that you send no hard copies of your application information.

Completed ERAS application should include the following

• The ERAS common application form and accompanying photo
• At least three letters of recommendation from supervising physicians. At least two of these should be from a supervising physician from an emergency medicine rotation. Academic EM program standardized letter of recommendation (SLOR) is highly recommended
• Official medical school transcript
• Copy of scores from medical licensing exams taken up to this point - USMLE Step 1 & 2 scores are preferable even for DO applicants
• Personal statement
• Dean's letter - we realize this letter will not be released until November 1
• A letter from your program director if you are currently in a training program

Interviews

Invitations for interviews will be issued by means of an ERAS e-mail (starting in November and throughout interview process) if applications are complete. Interviews occur primarily during December and January and take place on Monday and Wednesdays. You will be notified of the available dates when you are invited to interview. A typical interview day would last from 8:00a-3:00p and includes an introduction to the program from the residency director, personal interviews with residency director and faculty, lunch and informal time with current residents, and tour of the emergency department and medical center. Often, our current residents schedule a social event the night before the interview date at a local restaurant. We will notify you of the time and place when your interview is scheduled.

Air Travel

The Piedmont Triad International Airport located in Greensboro, NC is less than 30 minutes away from Winston-Salem. Charlotte Douglas Airport is 1 ½ hours from Winston-Salem and Raleigh-Durham is ~2 hours away.
