Student Enrichment Activities
CERTL offers a summer research program for high school students and a science and mathematics camp for K-8 students. Both programs have a strong PBL component.
The summer research program for high school students is designed to increase interest in mathematics and science research. The program provides hands-on research experience with distinguished faculty from Winston-Salem State University and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. One aim is to create experiences in these settings which will help bring to the classroom a renewed sense of excitement about research science, which in turn should stimulate students to pursue careers in mathematics and science. Students are mentored through the five- week experience by a matched faculty based on mutual interest between the student and the faculty research. Students are facilitated through the production of a scientific paper by their mentor and then present their topic at a Student Research Symposium Day culminating the summer experience.
The science and mathematics camp aims at promoting K-8 students' interest in these topics through hands-on activities and PBL interactive educational experiences. These young students spend two weeks on a university campus engaging real world problems in the topic areas while visiting campus laboratories, listening and talking to university scientists and mathematicians, and using internet and library resources to explore solutions.
