Magnet Hospital Recognition
North Carolina Baptist Hospital was the first Magnet Hospital in the Carolinas (1999)and was the host of the 5th Annual National Magnet Nursing Conference. We were redesignated in 2003 and 2009 making us in the top 2% of approximately 350 hospitals in the nation which have multiple Magnet designations. Currently we are one of 21 hospitals in North Carolina which are Magnet.

1.3 CNO
· The Chief Nursing Officer is a passionate advocate for nursing and has implemented the Patient Logistics Admission Center, Nursing Clinical Systems, the Unit Based Educator role, supported the Clinical Nurse Specialist roles, the float pool, multiple equipment requests and new staffing models
2.4 Decentralized decision making
· Shared Governance is enculturated with leadership provided by direct care nurses who demonstrate professional satisfaction in Shared Governance
3.8 Mentoring and succession planning
· There was an enculturation and numerous examples of mentorship and succession planning opportunities
4.17 Support for career development
This includes the Accelerated BSN program with Winston Salem State University, support for educational development through tuition reimbursement and support for certification.

· Relationship Based Care has been uniquely implemented throughout the nursing units

· There were numerous examples on the nursing units which included care of patient/family, care of self and care of team.

· Nursing Research is involved in a depth of activities including topics of Healing Touch and Transition to Practice
· Nursing Research Council solicits ideas from staff

· The depth of Coy Carpenter Library, access to resources there is an asset to and supports nursing
· The National Center for Applied Learning with virtual hospital and simulation labs supports nursing education and lifelong learning
· EBP and research is sustained and integrated with nurse involvement, Nurse Research Associate, CNSs, faculty and nursing leaders

· Date is substantial and of high quality
· There are numerous human and electronic resources
· The interdisciplinary Pain Committee is an asset to patient care

· The CNO and nursing leadership supports professional nursing practice through robust resources and an Interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

· Librarian from Coy Carpenter Library is a participant on the Nursing Research Council

· Improvements have included a reduction in pressure ulcers, door to needle time, Pain committee

· Examples of initiatives have included decreased Door to Balloon time and Nursing Clinical Systems implementation of bar coding for patient safety
