Stereotactic Radiosurgery

What Is Gamma Knife?

Really not a knife at all, Gamma Knife® stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a method of delivering an ultra-precise, highly-focused dose of radiation to destroy tumors, vascular malformations and other benign and malignant brain lesions.

Based on nearly 40 years of clinical experience, Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery has become the treatment of choice for selected benign and malignant brain tumors and vascular malformations involving the brain, as an alternative to conventional open surgery.

Gamma Knife SRS is not intended to replace conventional neurosurgery, but it is an effective additional weapon which may serve as a supplement to standard neurosurgical treatment or as the preferred course of treatment when traditional surgery is not appropriate.

Brain metastasis is the most common indication for Gamma Kniferadiosurgery. Radiosurgery for metastatic brain tumors may be used in conjunction with other therapies including conventional open skull surgery and whole brain radiation therapy depending on the size, location and number of tumors.

Gamma Knife treatment has resulted in tumor control (elimination of further growth, tumor shrinkage or obliteration) in about 90% of cases. Patients should ask their doctor about possible side effects of treatment as they relate to the specific type and location of their tumor.

Since there is a small risk for recurrence at previously treated sites and the possibility of developing new metastasis after treatment, progress is monitored with MRI scans every 3 months.
