Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSRMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) has been on the cutting edge of mind/body and integrative medicine for more than 20 years and represents participatory and integrative medicine at its best.

The MBSR program started in the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979 and is now offered in over 200 medical centers, hospitals, and clinics around the world, including some of the leading integrative medical centers such as the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine, and the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center for Integrative Medicine.

The central focus of the MBSR Program is intensive training in mindfulness meditative practices (body scan, gentle yoga, sitting and walking meditation) and the integration of these practices into one’s everyday life.  Highly experiential classes are taught weekly for 8 weeks for a total of 25 hours.  Through cultivation of a greater awareness of body sensations, thoughts and feelings, students increase their ability to respond, as opposed to react, to the challenges of daily living, and improve their overall health and well-being.
